Dr. Stephanie Lirio on AM Tampa Bay

Greenbrook's Florida Regional Medical Director, Dr. Stephanie Lirio, was recently on AM Tampa Bay to discuss TMS therapy.

Greenbrook's Florida Medical Director,  Dr. Stephanie Lirio , was recently on AM Tampa Bay to discuss TMS therapy. Dr. Lirio joined Greenbrook TMS in 2019. She received her medical degree from New York Medical College, and completed her psychiatry residency at the University of Pennsylvania.

During the AM Tampa Bay interview, Dr. Lirio discusses TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) therapy and how it works. TMS is an FDA-cleared treatment that delivers magnetic stimulation to the parts of the brain known to be underactive in people with depression. Dr. Lirio explains that TMS therapy is "for people who have tried a number of medications to treat their depression or talk treatment and haven't had an adequate response," which is an estimated one in three individuals.

Dr. Lirio also discusses the side effects of TMS therapy. Unlike drug-related side effects which can include insomnia, weight gain, and nausea, the most common side effect of TMS therapy is mild to moderate headache at the site of the magnetic pulse, which can be treated by over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol. During treatment, the TMS technician can also make adjustments if the treatment is uncomfortable. If you are interested in learning more about how TMS works visit our resource  page .
