Every September, communities across the country come together to observe Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time to raise awareness, share resources, and remind people that help is available. At Greenbrook, we believe that open, compassionate conversations about mental health save lives. Here's what Suicide Prevention Month is, why it matters, and how you can take part.
Suicide Prevention Month is observed each September to increase understanding of suicide risk, reduce stigma around mental health, and connect people to support. The goal is to help more people recognize the warning signs, start supportive conversations, and know where to turn for help.
Suicide is a leading cause of death, but it is often preventable. When those around them know how to notice warning signs and respond with care, it can make a difference. Awareness helps break down the stigma that keeps people from reaching out in the first place.
Knowing the signs is one of the most important ways to help. Someone may be at risk if they1:
These signs do not always mean someone is in crisis, but they are worth paying attention to. When in doubt, reach out.
You don't need to be a mental health professional to help. The National Institute of Mental Health outlines several evidence-informed steps anyone can take:2
Ask directly. It's a myth that asking about suicide gives them the idea. Asking someone whether they're thinking about suicide shows you care and gives them the space to be honest.
Listen without judgment. Let them share what they're feeling without rushing to "fix" it or minimize their pain.
Stay connected. Follow up with them through a check-in text or a quick phone call.
Help them find support. Share resources and encourage them to connect with a mental health provider and offer to help them take that first step.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available right now. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7 and free of charge. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
At Greenbrook, our care teams are here to support people navigating depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Reaching out is a sign of strength.
This Suicide Prevention Month, consider how you can help spread awareness. Share a resource, check in on someone you care about, or start a conversation about mental health. Every gesture helps build a community where people feel seen, supported, and safe to ask for help.
If you or someone you love is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 anytime. To learn more about Greenbrook's mental health services, contact our team.
