TMS THERAPY
FDA-cleared, non-medication depression treatment

The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are co-sponsoring World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) on September 10th. The theme for the 11th anniversary event is “Stigma: A Major Barrier for Suicide Prevention.” What an appropriate topic for this year’s WSPD! Considering that stigma is probably one of the main reasons why many patients suffering from mental health issues refuse to get help, it’s crucial that we dedicate this year’s WSPD to raise awareness to fight stigma in all of its forms.

The fight against stigma
Just this past year we’ve seen how the lack of education or empathy when it comes to mental health is still very much part of our culture. In one of the most recent examples, two well-known TV personalities articulated very ignorant comments when referring to individuals suffering from mental illness. Dr. Phil of the CBS Distribution Network uttered that people who are insane ‘suck on rocks and bark at the moon’ while Mr. Brian Williams of the NBC Nightly News perpetuated cruel and inaccurate stereotypes about people living with mental illness when he called Ariel Castro, the Cleveland kidnapper and rapist, ‘arguably the face of mental illness.’ NAMI’s press release in response to these events is point on: “We are surprised and disappointed over their source. Both Dr. Phil and Mr. Williams have been sensitive to some mental health concerns in the past. We expect better of them and they should know better.”
Statements like these only serve to propagate and wrongly validate these harmful stereotypes that keep feeding stigma. As President Obama recently stated, “We need to remove the ‘embarrassment’ associated with mental illness.”
Depression Treatment Options
Depression is a chronic disease and since research has shown that maintenance of antidepressants can cut the risk of a relapse in half[2], there are a large number of people who take antidepressants for years, if not decades. However, antidepressants come with their own set of complications. They can cause severe side effects that can negatively disrupt a patient’s quality of life. Patients who decide to treat their depression without drugs and look into non-medicine treatment alternatives now have options, such as TMS therapy , that have been proven beneficial and successful in treating Major Depression.
Visit the IASP website for a detailed agenda of the many events that will be taking place today.
