Dr. Kimberly Cress, Regional Medical Director for Greenbrook's Texas region, was recently featured in the Houston Chronicle to highlight her work and TMS therapy. Dr. Cress, who has years of experience in treating patients with TMS Therapy, helped a patient named Dana with her depression at Greenbrook's Katy, Texas center. Like many of our patients, Dana had tried several different antidepressant medications to help treat her depression symptoms, which she had been suffering with for years. None of the antidepressants that she tried worked, and she says the side effects from one medication were serious enough to land her in the emergency room.
It wasn't until Dana tried Greenbrook Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy under the care of Dr. Kimberly Cress that she was able to feel relief from her depression symptoms. TMS therapy is a non-drug, non-invasive, and FDA-cleared way to treat depression with zero downtime after treatment sessions. TMS therapy works by targeting the areas of the brain known to be underactive in those with depression with gentle magnetic pulses. The treatment process doesn't require any chemicals that have to enter the bloodstream or pass through the blood-brain barrier. Because of this difference, TMS therapy can sometimes help if antidepressants aren't working or are causing side-effects that are difficult to tolerate. Dana says that her husband was the first to notice the change after she started TMS therapy. A few weeks after she began going to treatment sessions (treatment typically takes places five days a week for six to nine weeks), she realized that she had gone an entire day without inexplicably bursting into tears. Now, Dana says “I enjoy everything and I don’t take any day for granted. I’m thankful that I can know work through problems.”
