Towson University students recently launched a new initiative called " Own Your Roar " to bring awareness to the mental health of student athletes. The movement was created by Towson sophomore Olivia Lubarsky, a gymnast who says that "I thought it would be powerful to implement a mental health campaign in order to validate, destigmatize, and raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention, as well as additionally work towards building strength in our program." "Own Your Roar" is a reference to the university's mascot, the Towson Tiger. Lubarksy explains that "It's an expression of my passion to make a difference within my immediate environment. I wanted to utilize my fortunate position as a Towson student-athlete to unite mental health and athletics, making a statement while using sports as the platform to increase awareness and start the conversation about the hidden epidemic that is mental health."
For many athletes, the first hurdle to depression recovery is acknowledging that depression is a real problem. Lubarsky says that "Initially, I would scold myself for feeling the way I did, believing that I was doing it to myself or making up excuses for why I was not succeeding at the unrealistic, perfectionistic expectations I set for myself."
Mental illness can happen to anyone, regardless of how strong and invincible they may appear-- Olympians, NBA players , and collegiate athletes are not exempt. Among Divison 1 university players, nearly a quarter experience depressive symptoms. Students who face both academic and athletic rigors while in college face a particular set of challenges, and can be particularly vulnerable to struggling with mental illness for a number of reasons, including:
