TMS THERAPY
FDA-cleared, non-medication depression treatment
Depression already causes a variety of unwelcomed symptoms such as fatigue and insomnia, which largely interrupt daily activities. Without proper treatment, this illness can ruin careers, families and relationships. Patients suffering from depression endure a large number of obstacles – physical, emotional and even economical – and recent articles are now showing that it can also put you at a higher risk for other health problems you would otherwise not experience.

July’s issue of the Psychiatric Services journal has emphasized a heightened risk of cancer among adults suffering from mental disorders. The study led by Gail L. Daumit, associate professor of medicine and psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine uncovered a lack of attention when it comes to screening mental patients for cancer.
In this study, the total cancer incidence for adults suffering from mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder was 2.6 times higher than the U.S population. The study looked at 3,317 Maryland Medicaid adult beneficiaries from 1994 to 2004 and concluded that clinicians should promote appropriate cancer screening and work to reduce modifiable risk factors, such as smoking, among persons with serious mental illness[1].
Other interesting facts mentioned on the study: Daumit speculates that the reason why female mental illness patients tend to have a higher risk of breast cancer could be the fact that they are less likely to have children, and childbearing is believed to reduce breast cancer risk. Many other behavioural and pharmacological factors need to be further studied and taken into account to decide on the role these two factors have on increasing cancer risk amongst mental illness patients.
Depression is a major public health problem and a treatable medical condition affecting 121 million people worldwide[2]. This illness can make other health problems feel worse, particularly chronic pain. A separate study uncovered a higher injury risk and severity in patients with serious mental illness which often leads to chronic pain made worse by depression symptoms. Patients in this study were almost twice as likely to visit a hospital emergency room with an injury and about 4.5 times as likely to die from these injuries[3]. What’s more interesting is that the risk is higher for both intentional and unintentional injuries, the most consistent being falls and minor violence.
